Dear Senator

I write to thank you for your support for HR 3293, Rep. Elton Gallegly's House counterpart of S. 1921, introduced by Sen. Campbell Nov. 16, authorizing placement of a ground-level "In Memory" memorial plaque within the 13-acre site of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, with an inscription to honor veterans whose postwar deaths are attributable to their service, but whose names cannot be added to The Wall.

Rep. Elton Gallegly introduced legislation to this effect, HR 3293, in the House of Representatives on November 10, joined by 104 original co-sponsors.Eventually garnering 290 cosponsors, it was passed unanimously by the House on May 9, with a total of 421 votes. S 1921 gained 51 cosponsors before, in order to assure passage by Memorial Day, action was taken to pass the House version by unanimous consent. The president signed the legislation June 15, creating Public Law 106-214.

Supporting organizations include the Veterans of Foreign Wars, AMVETS, Vietnam Women's Memorial, Inc., Rolling Thunder, Inc., The Korean War Veterans Association, the National Congress of American Indians, the National Conference of Viet Nam Veteran Ministers, the Society of the 173D Airborne Brigade, the Agent Orange Widows Awareness Coalition, the Vietnam War In Memory Memorial, Inc., and American Gold Star Mothers.

Thank you for working with your colleagues in this non-partisan effort to clear the way to honor these veterans year-round and offer their families a well-deserved symbol of healing that they can touch and remember.

Sincerely,
