They come from the day and night sky by parachute, glider and helicopter. They put their lives on the line to keep our nation free and many pay the ultimate price for that dedication to duty and country.

From the Troop Carrier Pilots, Glider Pilots and Helicopter Pilots who must deliver their cargo of airborne soldiers safely to the Drop Zone or Landing Zone, to the paratroopers, glider troopers, and air assault troopers plunging into battle, airborne soldiers have always shared a common bond of brotherhood.

For fifty years, the United States Armed Forces have relied upon elite airborne units to lead the way in difficult, dangerous and vital missions. Heralded by their many outstanding accomplishments during this past half century, the courageous men who have earned the "silver badges of courage" of the airborne forces have fought and died so their fellow Americans might live in freedom.

Subject: Squadron KIA Document

I am still working on the Squadron KIA list. I have it at the 96% solution. I am trying to clear up some problem areas with ensuring that this document will be totally correct. Does anyone remember if B Troop or D Troop 1st Sqdn. 1st Cavalry Regt was ever attached, to 2/17th ?

I have two names Cpt Alvie Ledford, and CW0 William Pierson, Ledford is on the 101st ABN DIV Casualty roster, Pierson is not. It has them assigned to 1-1 Cav. 101st ABN DIV. The VHPA list has them listed as being members of D 1-1, 23 Inf Div. Can anyone help me clarify this. Thanks for the assistance. This document when finished is going to be about 60 pages both sides. I hope to have a copy for you by reunion time. Keep in touch.

There are one or two people that we listed on our KIA site that served with B Troop at one time or another, that were killed in action in Vietnam, while serving with another unit.

William "Biff" Pierson was one of those people. He was assigned to B 2/17th at Ft Hood TX and shipped to Vietnam with the unit in Mar 1969. Shortly after our arrival in country, he was infused into D 1/1 which was the only cav unit operating in the 101st A/O. We were not operational since our air craft were still on a boat coming over. (I'm not sure if D 1/1 was attached to the 101 or were just in the area). After the 2/17th became fully operational D 1/1 was sent south I believe.

As you probably know, He and Ledford were in a cobra that exploded in the air off FB Birmingham and Pierson's body was never found and only parts of Ledford recovered.

I have finalized the 2d Squadron, 17th Cavalry Regt, Vietnam KIA roster. I have come up with a roster with 137 squadron troopers on it. I will forward a copy. I have transcribed it to MS Access database. As soon as I give the Squadron Commander his copy I will forward copies to all who desire one. I still have a few loose ends, regarding what Troop some of the men were in.

Was Arthur Darnell Neal killed on UH-1H 67-17734 with CW2 Chavez, SP4 Holmgren, and PVT Scruggs? I would appreciate any help you could render in this matter.

I will be PCS'ing to Patrick AFB, Florida with assignment to the State Dept Air Wing. I leave here 28 Feb 99 for three years. I hope to continue my relationship with you and your association. Take care, stay well, and stay in touch.

In looking at your current KIA page there is a letter there from George Arzente. He wanted to know if Neal was killed in a particular crash. I can answer that question for you. Arthur Darnell Neal died of an illness on July 2. The crash of #67-17734 occurred on June 18.
